USS Iowa BB-61 Turret 2 Explosion

Posted on 19. Jun, 2008 by Eric Broze in Video

Here is a  short video I made about The USS Iowa BB61 Turret 2 Explosion.  47 brave sailors and friends died shortly after breakfast on April 19, 1989.  I was a Seaman assigned to 3rd Deck division and in the turret 3 powder magazines, at the time.

All news headlines were scanned from my own scrapbook. Some pics gathered from various online sources.

Please take a moment to learn more and help make the USS Iowa BB-61 a museum in California.

Interesting video. 20th Anniversary is next Sunday in Norfolk at IOWA POINT.
Never saw some of the photos you have, where did you get them? You don’t happen to have the cruise video from the Med Cruise 87-88 do you? (Soundtrack was to Genesis “Home by the Sea”).

I pulled some photos from online. The rest were scanned in newspaper articles. I don’t have much from that time, but I do have video of people on the pier another guy did.

I can’t make the Norfolk point, but await the opening of the museum on the west coast.
